Rural Development requires a holistic perspective, we emphasise links between sustainable production and sustainable livelihoods and the rural-urban interface, where increased market access, improved infrastructure and mobility, urbanisation are key issues.
Our mission is to support the development of improved institutional capacity for sustainable use of local resources. In the process of capacity building, our focus lies on local people’s initiatives and their assets and capital, simultaneously coordinating with the interests of regional and national stakeholders.
We find the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach particularly appropriate for addressing the diverse needs of rural households. We believe that the following aspects are crucial for promoting sustainable growth in rural areas:
- Increasing and strengthening household access to key resources, including natural, human, financial and social capital;
- Increasing human and institutional capacity at all levels in development work;
- Minimising risks and vulnerability of poor households;
We believe it is important to create institutional frameworks which enable rural people to own, control and use natural resources. In addition, secure ownership of development planning processes by resource users gives poor people control and initiative of the long-term development of their livelihoods.
