Water is essential for human development. It is essential for society's livelihood support system, and its management is crucial for economic prosperity and poverty alleviation.

Water is also a critical factor for regional cooperation and development. Transcending many boundaries, it is important that benefits generated by water enhance development at local, national and regional levels.

The programme provides advanced learning and a meeting place for professionals involved in water issues in the Euphrates-Tigris region. It aims to build personal and institutional bridges and to discuss scientific options for sharing the benefits generated by sustainable water development in the region.

Training Methodology

The training includes lectures, a role play, group- and plenary discussions, study visits and field excursions. A key feature of the Programme is a learning process, where the participants’ own learning objectives - in the context of their home organisations - play an important role. Hence, the Programme is continually adjusted to respond to the participants’ interests and backgrounds. An essential part of this process is that each participant will carry out an Individual Project (IP) that links each participant to the subject matter of the training programme, fellow programme participants and his/her home organisation.

Another key feature of the programme is the Start-Up Workshop (SUW) that will be held in each participant’s home organisation prior to the first scheduled meeting. The SUW will be prepared by the participant in cooperation with a facilitator from the programme management team and the main objectives are to involve the home organisation in the programme and to develop the scope of the IP.

On acceptance to the programme more information regarding this will be sent out.

Specific and practical information concerning the Programme on Regional Development of the ET region

In this programme the participants need to find funding themselves for the travels to Syria since this is not included in the funding from Sida. The international travels to Sweden are however included.

The programme takes place in Sweden in December, which is in the Swedish winter, the weather will be cold and maybe snowy.
